Information about volume VIII of the journal “Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies”

We hereby extend an invitation to submit texts for Volume 8 of the “Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies” yearbook, the main topic of which is the legitimacy of using the term “totalitarianism” to describe phenomena occurring in the Fascist, Nazi and Communist systems in the context of an analysis of twentieth-century European history.

The objective consists, first and foremost, in arriving at a description of totalitarian practices, as well as initiating a discussion on the relevance of the term “totalitarianism”, and on the evolution of totalitarian systems and their specific features. Deliberations will focus on both theoretical and methodological aspects, and distinct phenomena and processes typifying 20th-century history. Texts touching upon the following issues will be particularly welcome:

  • totalitarianism and authoritarianism – a theoretical and example-based analysis
  • depictions of totalitarian systems in historiography
  • practices distinguishing totalitarian systems
  • ideology and totalitarianism
  • totalitarization and detotalitarization
  • the legacy of totalitarian systems
  • defining totalitarianism in a historical approach
  • comparative studies of totalitarian systems
  • settlement of legal and historical accounts with totalitarian systems
  • post-totalitarian politics of memory

In addition to texts on the main topic, we would be interested in articles on other issues of 20th-century history and reviews of publications on topics constituting the primary focus of our yearbook.

The editorial board of the “Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies” yearbook invites authors to send in articles, in Polish or English, touching upon the aforementioned areas of research. Each text should be accompanied by an abstract outlining the topic of the article and presenting its bibliography, and also containing five keywords and a short biographical note on the author. All four elements – the articles, abstracts, bibliographical notes and bibliographies – should satisfy the requirements of the instruction set forward on our website.

Articles may be submitted by 29 February 2024. The publication of volume VIII has been planned for the 4th quarter of 2024.

Articles that pass the review process for inclusion in the journal shall be translated into English/Polish by the translators of the Pilecki Institute. Texts may contain no more than 80,000 characters with spaces (together with footnotes).

Texts should be sent to the following address: redakcja@instytutpileckiego.pl
